FirstClassｨ Client version 3.12 for Macｪ OS is freely-distributable software used to connect to FirstClass Servers by network or modem.
This ReadMe file describes the folders in the FirstClass Client folder, and provides introductory installation and operation instructions. It also describes the new features available in this version of the product.
FirstClass Client folders
FirstClass Client makes use of several folders that should remain in the same folder as the FirstClass Client application itself:
Settings: The folder in which the client looks for FirstClass settings documents when it starts.
Modems: The folder in which modem configuration settings are saved as individual text files. This folder contains generic modem configuration files for Hayes-compatible modems and individual ones for the most popular modems. See below for details about additional modem configuration files.
FCP: The folder in which FirstClass scripts describing various connection methods are stored. Do not edit the documents in this folder. They are for use by the client application only.
Scripts: The folder in which the client looks for login scripts to connect to servers through SprintNet, and so on.
Download: The folder FirstClass first suggests when downloading files from a server. This folder can be an alias to anywhere else in your systemﾑeven your desktop, if you're running System 7.
There is an additional collection of individual modem configuration files available in the Other Modems.sea self-extracting archive. Double-click on this to create an Other Modems folder which contains the additional modem configuration files. To install an individual file from this folder for use by the FirstClass Client, drag it from the Other Modems folder into the Modems folder. Drag only the individual file you require, or the client will take a long time to produce the pop-up list of available modems.
Installation
Installing FirstClassｨ Client 3.12 is easy. Drag the FirstClass Client folder, complete with all of its subfolders, onto your hard drive.
Operation
Set up your connection method to the FirstClass Server by pressing the Setup button on the Login form. Press the Setup button beside the Connect via field to set up details of that connection.
If you have a settings document for a particular FirstClass Server, most of your setup information is stored within that document. Simply double-click on the settings document after installing FirstClass Client 3.12. (If you have difficulty launching the client this way, you need to rebuild your Macintosh desktop. Consult your Macintosh owner's manual.)
New features in version 3.1
Version 3.1 of the FirstClass Client application offers the following new features:
Multi-level undo and redo: The message editor now supports multiple Undo and Redo.
New cross-platform customizable settings document: This version of the FirstClass Client uses a new cross-platform settings document which replaces the files used by previous versions. Contact your administrator for the latest settings document for your system. The client automatically updates previous versions of your settings documents to the new format.
Open Transport: This version of the FirstClass Client supports Open Transport.
Blind carbon copies (Bcc): This version of the FirstClass Client offers a blind carbon copy feature when used with a FirstClass Server (for Macintosh or for Windows NT) version 3.0 or later. Recipients specified in the To and Cc fields will not be able to see who received blind carbon copies. To display the Bcc field (which is normally hidden directly below the Cc field), choose Message -> Show Bcc, and then type the user name. If you want to hide the Bcc field again while you are editing the message (for privacy reasons, perhaps), choose Message -> Hide Bcc. When reading a message, a Bcc recipient can see his or her name in the Bcc field (as well as names in the To and Cc fields), but not the names of any other Bcc recipients. Recipients whose names appear in the To or Cc fields cannot see the Bcc field at all. The names of Bcc recipients do not appear in the message history. Consult your administrator to find out if this option is available to you.
Reply with quoting: This version of the FirstClass Client allows you to include quoted text when you send a reply to a message. Text in the Quoted style appears with a gray background. Text in boldface type, identifying the person who sent the message from which the quote has been taken, appears on the line above the quoted text. If you click and type into quoted text, your new text appears in Plain style.
You can use the Reply with quoting feature in two ways:
･ Open the original message and choose Message -> Reply with Quote. The entire original message appears in your reply, formatted as described above.
･ Select text in the original message, and then choose Message -> Reply or Message -> Reply Special. The selected text appears in the body of your reply, formatted as described above.
Other changes in this release
･ The suggested memory requirement has been increased to 1200 K.
･ The Message menu now offers a New Document command. Previously, you could create new documents only by holding down the Option key and choosing Message -> New Message.
･ To turn off the unread flag (while in a list view), you now need to press Option and click directly on the flag. In previous clients, you could press Option and click on either the flag or the small icon.
